Partner experience
Both apps connect a partner with a code. In Flo the main user taps “Link your partner” and the partner picks “I am a partner”. Flo’s help pages say basic partner access, including pregnancy tracking, is available to all users, that partners see regular updates and typical symptoms, and that they won’t see symptoms you logged yourself. Flo also notes the feature is designed for a male-female couple.
In Elara the mother creates an 8-character code in Settings → Partner. It is shown as a QR code, can be sent as a link or typed in, and expires after 15 minutes (a new one appears automatically). Your partner installs Elara on their iPhone, signs in with Apple or Google and enters the code. From then on they see the current week and baby size, belly and ultrasound photos, a wishlist they can tick off, and 50+ weekly ideas for how to help. They also get pushes when you add an appointment, reach your daily kick goal or post a new photo. Your journal, mood, kick log, contractions and symptoms are not shared.
Tracking tools
Flo’s listing describes pregnancy tracking with weekly updates as your baby develops, plus in-depth pregnancy features in Premium. A kick counter or contraction timer is not mentioned in Flo’s listing, so we don’t claim either way.
Elara has a kick counter and a contraction timer that follows the 5-1-1 rule; both run as a Live Activity on the Lock Screen. It also has a due-date countdown, journal, belly photo timeline, hospital bag checklist, appointments, baby names, Apple Health for water, weight, sleep and some symptoms, and a Memory Book PDF. Elara has no Apple Watch app; Flo supports Apple Watch.
Content and scale
Flo is one of the largest women’s health apps: about two million US ratings (4.74) and 21 languages. If you are still trying to conceive or want your cycle history in the same place, Flo covers that and Elara does not. Elara is new: at the time of checking it had 4 US ratings. It is available in 25+ languages and focuses only on pregnancy, week by week.
Privacy and ads
We did not find Apple’s “Contains Advertising” label on Flo’s US listing. Elara contains no advertising and no ad SDK. Journal entries, kick and contraction sessions, symptoms and health logs are stored only on your iPhone. A small profile (name, due date) is kept in Elara’s Firebase account so partner mode and notifications work, and shared photos and the wishlist sync while a partner is linked. The app uses product analytics (Firebase Analytics, PostHog), so we do not describe it as tracking-free.
Price
Flo is free with in-app purchases listed from $1.99 to $59.99, including Flo Premium and a Flo Pregnancy Tracker purchase. Elara is a free download with an optional Premium subscription. The partner does not need a separate subscription: their access is included while the mother has Premium or a trial. Without it, the partner gets a one-time 5-minute preview, then the partner app pauses until the mother subscribes.
Choose Flo if

- You value a very large, established product with 21 languages
